How do you get HD?

Q. How do you get this condition?

Chantal, 8, Netherlands

Ask a question

Hi Chantal,

Thanks for the question. HD is a genetic disease. This means that if you have a parent who has HD, you might have HD yourself, although it usually does not appear until much later in life.

About half the children of parents with HD will get HD themselves sometime in their lives. If you do not have a parent with HD it is very unlikely that you will get HD.

Researchers all over the world are working hard to find ways of stopping or slowing down the disease.

Best wishes.
