A. Hi Kirsty

Thank you for sending in your questions! I’ll go through them for you below:

How old do people with HD live?

Well most people get HD aged 30-50, but actually HD can start at any age. So someone could be really quite old when they first get HD, or could be very young too. Generally once someone has HD they live for around 15+ years. So to answer the question, it really depends on the individual.

Do people die from HD eventually?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for HD and anyone who has HD will die because of it, usually after 15+ years of having the condition. Although it is not usually HD that causes the person to pass away, that tends to be something like pneumonia, which they suffer from because of HD.

How common is HD?

In Europe and North America, roughly 1 in every 8,000 people have HD. In South America there are thought to be more cases of HD, and Asia tends to have less cases of HD.

I hope all this helps. Email me again if you have any other questions.
